Configuring a Zebra Symbol LI4278 Wireless Barcode Scanner
Shopfront supplies and supports the Zebra Symbol LI4278 Wireless Barcode Scanner (previously model was the LS4278). This article describes setting up and configuring the scanner alongside common troubleshooting steps.
Initial Setup
The LI4278 can be easily configured to work with Shopfront; most of the default settings can be used, and the only requirement is to add a carriage return to trigger the enter key automatically.
Once you've unboxed your scanner, connect the USB cable to the cradle and the USB port on the computer you will be using the scanner with. Place the scanner on the cradle to automatically pair it and begin charging.
Add a Carriage Return (Enter Key)
After connecting the scanner for the first time, scan the following barcodes to enable adding a carriage return.

If this occurs, do not use the barcode scanner and move the barcode scanner to a location within normal operating temperature. The scanner can remain in the cradle while the battery warms or cools to normal operating temperature. |
Red & Green - Continuous Flash |
Critical battery temperature fault. Battery is above or below normal operating temperature. If this occurs, do not use the barcode scanner and move the barcode scanner to a location within normal operating temperature. The scanner can remain in the cradle while the battery warms or cools to normal operating temperature. |

Commonly Asked Questions
After connecting my scanner the barcodes remain in the search bar rather than adding the product to the sell screen
If you scan a barcode and it remains in the Shopfront search bar without adding the product to the sale, simply scan the three Add a Carriage Return (Enter Key) barcodes.
The GIF below shows you what it looks like without the Carriage Return (Enter Key) barcodes being scanned.
The GIF below shows the result of scanning the Carriage Return (Enter Key) barcodes.
The scanner is losing power and can't scan barcodes
If the scanner loses power after scanning a barcode and is over two years old, the battery may need replacing, which we can supply.
If the scanner beeps 3 times after an unsuccessful scan, then please complete the steps below to troubleshoot your device (between each step, try to scan a barcode to see if the issue has been resolved):
- Reboot the PC,
- Scan the pairing barcode on the cradle,
- Disconnect the cable located at the bottom of the cradle
- Disconnect the cradle USB cable from the PC and plug it into a different USB port
- While the LI4278 is in the cradle:
- Pull and hold the LI4278 trigger for approximately 20-30 seconds,
- A red LED light should start blinking, signalling that it has started re-initialising/resetting,
- While resetting, the scanner should emit power-up beeps,
- After the scanner resets, release the trigger and remove it from the cradle,
- Scan the pairing barcode on the cradle
- Disconnect the battery from the bottom of the barcode scanner temporarily, then plug it back in. You will need a Phillips head screwdriver to disconnect the battery,
- Scan the set factory defaults barcode (under the Reset Scanner section) followed by the Carriage Return (Enter Key) barcodes in sequence,
- Update the scanner's firmware by downloading the 123 Scan Utility
The cradle has no light but temporarily presents a light when the computer is rebooted
If you reboot the PC and the green light appears on the scanner cradle before Windows finishes booting up and then turns off again, try scanning the HID USB host-type barcode below while the computer is booting up, and the green light still appears on the cradle.
HID Keyboard Emulation
The scanner doesn't scan large cartons or case barcodes
By default, the barcode scanner is only configured to scan standard size barcodes, if you can't scan large carton or case barcodes please scan this barcode to activate interleaved mode (this may result in barcodes scanning slightly slower).
Enable Interleaved 2 of 5 (01h)
Can I pair the scanner to a Bluetooth device, such as a mobile phone?
Under most circumstances, you won't want to pair via Bluetooth and instead connect the cradle to a computer via USB. However, if you want to use the scanner with a mobile device or another device that supports Bluetooth, follow the steps below:
- Please ensure the scanner has enough time to charge by connecting the barcode scanner in the cradle with the USB cable.
- Ensure Bluetooth has been enabled on your device,
- Scan the following barcode to configure the scanner for Bluetooth compatibility,
- Select pair a new device on your mobile device. You should see the name of the scanner (LI4278), select this to begin pairing,
- Once paired, you should see a code appear on your Android device. If you are using an Apple device, the scanner should connect without a code being provided. In that case, please skip step 6,
- Enter the code using the barcode scanner to scan the numeric barcodes listed below.
