How to fix Windows Sharing

If presented with the below password prompt when exporting shelf tickets or a shared printer is no longer working it is most likely due to a Windows Update or a replacement of your modem.

Firstly, determine which operating system your PC is on before following the instructions below.

 

Windows 7

1. Click on your Windows icon on the bottom left side of the task bar

2. Type Control Panel and click on the respective icon

3. Click on 'Network and Internet'

4. Click on 'Network and Sharing Center'

 

5. If 'View Your Active Networks' is set to a 'Public Network', please click the link and select the 'Home network'.

Note; feel free to cancel the 'Create a Homegroup' dialog box once presented.

 

6. Click 'Change advanced sharing settings'

7. Scroll to 'Password protected sharing'. Select 'Turn off password protected sharing' and please make sure to click on 'Save changes' to finalise your settings.

Note; Please make sure to turn off passwords for all PCs. 

 

Windows 10

1. Open 'Settings' from the Windows button on the left side of the bar at the bottom of your screen.

 

2. Select 'Network & Internet'

 

3. Ensure that your network is set to 'Private' and not 'Public'. If your network is set to 'Public' then please click on 'Change connection properties'.

 

4. Select 'Private' and then select the back arrow at the top left of screen.

 

5. On the next screen please select 'Status'

 

6. Below 'Change your network settings' select 'Sharing options'.

 

7. Please make sure to tick 'on' for 'Network Discovery' and 'File and Printer Sharing'. Expand 'All Networks' by clicking the arrow that points downwards.

8. Select 'Turn off password protected sharing' and please make sure to click on 'Save changes' to finalise your settings.

 

Note; Please make sure to turn off passwords for all PCs.

 

Windows 11

If the PC sharing the files/folders is Windows 11 and the PCs accessing these files are on Windows 10 you will need to enable SMB 1.0/CIFS Client on the Windows 10 PCs.
