How to Create a New Product

Products are the objects sold during a sale to your customers. In Shopfront we have several different types of products that you can create, for this tutorial, we will be showing you how to create a General Product however we also have guides available for creating the following product types:

We highly suggest you become familiar with creating a General Product before creating another type of product.

 

Getting Started

  1. Open the Menu
  2. Select Stock Management
  3. Select Products
  4. Click + Add Product

You will now be presented with the Creation Wizard which will take you through the product creation process step by step. You can also choose to skip the wizard to create the product from the Modification Page. 

Product Creation Wizard

The Product Creation Wizard allows you to easily create Normal Products, to create any other type of product please select Skip. Within the Wizard, you can use the 'Enter' key, or the NEXT / PREVIOUS buttons on the screen to navigate between pages.

  • The first step in the Wizard is adding the barcode for your product, scan or type it into the text field.

  • If you have access to our Master Database you will be presented with an option to choose a product from our Master Database.

  • Creating a product using our Master Database allows for quick and easy product creation. If the product is found it will be created for you with all the details out of our database including:
    • Name
    • Case Quantity
    • Category
    • Brand
    • Family
    • Tags
    • Barcodes
    • Supplier Codes
    • Images
  • If the product isn't found you'll have to add these details manually with the wizard or on the modification page

Product Modification Page

All products must have at least a name and a case quantity. We would also recommend classifying your product in order to make your reporting accurate.

Field Description
Product Name The name of the product appears throughout Shopfront including on receipts, in reports, and on the sell screen.

Type

The type of product. Set Normal Product, Basket Product, Packages, or Components. The type can only be modified on original creation, not at a later time. 

Status

Set product to Active, not selling, not purchasing or inactive

Description

The description of the product. This is currently not visible anywhere else in Shopfront. This is a useful field if you integrate with an eCommerce website. 
Case Quantity  This is the amount of items that come in a case, click here for more information.
Category The category that this product belongs in, click here for more information.
Brand The brand this product is from, click here for more information
Family The family this product is from, for more information about families click here.
Tags The tags this product has, we typically use identifiers that we like to report on (e.g. local, imported).

 

Sell & Cost Prices

When you create a product you typically want to be able to sell and receive it. We provide several different options for how you would like to price your product and calculate the profit off it.

Field Description
Tax Rate The tax rate for the product. If the product is tax exempt then you should press the x button at the end of the field to clear it.
Cost Percentage Whether the cost is a percentage of the sell price, enabling this enables Request Price. This is typical for products like sim cards and external gift vouchers.
Case Cost  The cost overall per case is automatically updated when you receive invoices.
Request Price Whether this product should request a price when it is selected in the sell screen.
Request Quantity Whether this product should request a quantity when it is selected in the sell screen. 

 

Inventory

Shopfront can track your inventory at each of your outlets. This is displayed as Items when the Case Quantity is set to one, otherwise, this is split into Cases and Items.

Field Description
Current Stock The amount of stock you currently have on hand.
Reorder Level When the current inventory reaches this level the system will reorder the amount specified in Reorder Amount when creating a dynamic order to a supplier.
Reorder Amount  The amount to reorder when the Reorder Level is reached.
Reorder Limit If an order generation reorder amount is greater than the Reorder Limit, the reorder amount will be replaced with the Reorder Limit amount.
Reorder Rounding If the reoder can be set to round to case. You have the option of No Rounding (default), Round Up to Case, Round Down to Case or Round Naturally. 
Track Inventory  Tracking inventory is set on by default. Toggling track inventory off will stop inventory tracking for the product. 

 

Barcodes

In Shopfront we support adding multiple barcodes to products in multiple quantities. This prevents us from requiring child and parent products like found in other POS systems.

Field Description
Quantity The quantity of the product this barcode is work.
Barcode The actual barcode.

 

Suppliers

We support having multiple suppliers for each product. When you have multiple suppliers one of the suppliers becomes the Core Supplier. The Core Supplier is the main supplier that you order the product.

Field Description
Supplier The supplier you can receive this product from.
Supplier Code The code used by the supplier to describe this product.

 

Images

Images are currently not widely used throughout Shopfront, however, that is changing in our upcoming sell screen redesign. Shortly you'll be able to see your product's images on your customer facing displays, receipts, and more. These are also available through the API if your store is connected to an eCommerce site.

 

Loyalty

Loyalty at this level overrides all other loyalty. This can be disabled for each outlet or used to override the loyalty amounts.

Field Description
Quantity The quantity of the product a customer needs to by to get this loyalty rate.
Earn Rate The amount of points earned for every dollar spent, if this is left blank it reverts to the default loyalty rate.
Redeem Rate The amount of points required to redeem each dollar, if this is left blank it reverts to the default loyalty rate.

 

Ticket Information

Ticket information allows you to export additional information to your ticket templates. For more information click here
